UPDATED - William Penn Students Attempt Largest High School Blood Drive - February 25

UPDATE:
Due to the predicted inclement weather, the William Penn High School blood drive has been CANCELLED. It will be rescheduled for later this school year.

New Castle, DE - On Thursday, February 25, students and staff from William Penn High School in New Castle hope to break yet another record - by holding the largest one-day high school blood drive on the Delmarva Peninsula for the fourth year in a row.

In the 2008-2009 school year, William Penn had 201 blood donors in one day - more than any of the other 67 high schools in Blood Bank of Delmarva's School Blood Drive Program.

"As we celebrate the 25th anniversary of our School Blood Drive Program, we need to recognize and thank William Penn for their level of support - even from the beginning," said Carrie Aiken, spokesperson for Blood Bank of Delmarva. "They have always been at the top or in the top two for the most student donors and, as a result, thousands of patients have benefitted."

William Penn staff and students also submitted the most HERO cards in the 2008-2009 school year. HERO cards can be filled out after a blood donation at any Blood Bank of Delmarva donation site and credit is given to the school.

Thanks to schools across the Peninsula, a total of 6,909 donations were collected at 119 school blood drives from September 2008 to May 2009 - up more than 3.5% from the previous school year. By providing a positive, first-time experience giving blood, the Blood Bank hopes to establish a relationship with young donors that will last a lifetime. Currently less than 7% of all Blood Bank members are under the age of 35.

The School Blood Drive Program provides 8% of the blood supply on Delmarva. The program started in 1984 with just 140 donations at two schools.

90-Year-Old Woman Celebrates Birthday By Giving Platelets

DSC01200-web.jpg
Jane Frelick of Newark turned 90-years-old on February 16, 2010 and celebrated by saving lives. She gave a platelet donation - just as she has done for the past decade.

"When you talk to Jane, you are immediately impressed by her positivity and her enthusiasm towards saving lives," said Bob Travis, President and CEO of Blood Bank of Delmarva. "She is one of our most dedicated donors. She gives platelets about once a month and has donated more than 10 gallons to date."

Jane and her husband first joined the Blood Bank in 1955. Though she wasn't able to give blood for many years because of low hemoglobin levels and six pregnancies, she later learned that she was perfectly suited to be a platelet donor and has been giving regularly ever since. Her birthday donation was her 43rd time giving platelets.

BLOOD DONATIONS IN WILMINGTON INCREASE BY 10% IN 2009

Wilmington, DE - Just one year after Blood Bank of Delmarva opened its new Wilmington Donor Center, the organization has been able to increase downtown blood donations by 10%.

The Blood Bank moved from the ninth floor of the 913 North Market Street building in January of 2009 to a street-front location on the first floor of the same building. In the year since the new center officially opened its doors, there have been 4911 blood donations - about 10% more than the year before.

"This is a significant jump in donations and we are really encouraged," said Bob Travis, President and CEO of Blood Bank of Delmarva. "Not even two years ago, we were strongly considering a permanent closure of the Wilmington Center. However, city leaders urged us to stay and move into a more visible space. So far, it seems to be working and we are optimistic that the increase in donations will continue."

The Blood Bank plans to continue reaching out to downtown businesses and organizations to help spread word-of-mouth about the center and boost donation schedules.

The Wilmington Donor Center first opened in 1984, and for about 15 years, the facility consistently had about 8,000 blood donations a year. But for the past decade, there has only been about half of that volume.

About the Wilmington Donor Center
The Wilmington center is open every day - Monday to Friday - and has alternating morning and afternoon/evening hours. Wilmington Center donors enjoy some "perks" not offered at other Blood Bank locations. It has free WiFi, a gourmet coffee bar, and validated parking for blood donors (a new parking garage is located directly across the street on Shipley Street). Blood Bank of Delmarva has 3 other permanent donor centers (Newark and Dover, DE and Salisbury, MD) and 29 established mobile locations throughout Delmarva.

WOMAN CELEBRATES 90TH BIRTHDAY BY GIVING PLATELETS

DSC01200-web.jpg
NEWARK, DE - Jane Frelick of Newark is turning 90-years-old on Tuesday, February 16 and she has big plans to mark the occasion. Jane will be saving lives by donating platelets at one o'clock (donation takes more than an hour) at Blood Bank of Delmarva's Christiana Center - just has she has done for the past decade.

Her birthday donation will be her 43rd time giving platelets.

Platelet donations (call platelet pheresis) provide six to ten times more platelets than a regular whole blood donation. Platelets are cells that help control bleeding and assist in the clotting process. They have a shelf life of just five days and are needed to treat people with leukemia or cancer. During platelet pheresis, the donor's blood passes through a machine that separates out the platelets and returns the red cells and other components to the donor. The process takes about 90 minutes. Donors can give platelets every two weeks.

DONORS NEEDED TO REPLENISH LOCAL BLOOD SUPPLY

Newark, DE - In the last week, back-to-back major snow storms have forced Blood Bank of Delmarva to close its centers and cancel blood drives for three days - last Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a result, more than 700 donor appointments were lost. While the Blood Bank has been able to fill every order from the 17 hospitals it serves, backup supplies are low for some types and must be replenished.

To help boost blood inventory levels, additional appointments have been added to the schedules for Friday and Saturday, and the Dover Center has been opened Saturday to accommodate additional blood donors.

"This is not an emergency appeal, but we do want to alert the public that there is a considerable need for blood donors - especially platelet and Type O whole blood donors - throughout this week and next so that we can replenish supplies that will support hospital needs," said Bob Travis, Blood Bank President and CEO. "Those who are able to travel safely to our donor centers are urged to do so."

Appointments are advised. While walk-in donors are welcome, it is strongly encouraged for blood donors to make an appointment, since center hours vary from location to location. To make an appointment or to learn about donor locations, dates and times, call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8 or click HERE.
