DONORS NEEDED TO REPLENISH LOCAL BLOOD SUPPLY
Newark, DE - In the last week, back-to-back major snow storms have forced Blood Bank of Delmarva to close its centers and cancel blood drives for three days - last Saturday, Wednesday and Thursday. As a result, more than 700 donor appointments were lost. While the Blood Bank has been able to fill every order from the 17 hospitals it serves, backup supplies are low for some types and must be replenished.
To help boost blood inventory levels, additional appointments have been added to the schedules for Friday and Saturday, and the Dover Center has been opened Saturday to accommodate additional blood donors.
"This is not an emergency appeal, but we do want to alert the public that there is a considerable need for blood donors - especially platelet and Type O whole blood donors - throughout this week and next so that we can replenish supplies that will support hospital needs," said Bob Travis, Blood Bank President and CEO. "Those who are able to travel safely to our donor centers are urged to do so."
Appointments are advised. While walk-in donors are welcome, it is strongly encouraged for blood donors to make an appointment, since center hours vary from location to location. To make an appointment or to learn about donor locations, dates and times, call 1 888 8-BLOOD-8 or click HERE.
