LOCAL STUDENTS TO BE HONORED FOR SAVING MORE LIVES AT SCHOOL THAN EVER BEFORE

Awards luncheons recognize high schools for 10% increase in school blood drive donations

NEWARK, DE - Blood Bank of Delmarva will hold awards luncheons throughout Delmarva this week to recognize the 67 local high schools that contributed to the record-breaking 2009-2010 School Blood Drive Program. The luncheons also help fuel enthusiasm for this year's program. These luncheons (dates, times, and locations listed below) are attended by students and school advisors who will play a major role in organizing high school blood drives during the 2010-2011 season.

From September 2009 to May 2010, high schools and colleges hosted a record 125 blood drives resulting in 7,539 units of blood. That is up nearly 10% from 6,909 donations collected the previous school year.

"Our School Blood Drive Program is a fun, friendly competition between schools to recruit the most blood donors. Students do everything from promoting the blood drive, to filling blood donation schedules and helping on the day of the drive," said Kelly Howard, Blood Bank School Blood Drive Coordinator. "The competition has been one of the most effective tools we have to attract young blood donors, which is incredibly important."

The following schools took top honors in their region for the largest number of blood donors last school year:

NEW CASTLE COUNTY: William Penn High School- 219 donors
CECIL COUNTY: Bohemia Manor High School- 195 donors
KENT COUNTY: Lake Forest High School- 235 donors
SUSSEX COUNTY: Sussex Technical High School- 171 donors
