"Days of Remembrance" To be Held in Honor of 9/11 Heroes

A decade ago, news of the devastating terrorist attacks on September 11 began to circulate and hundreds of donors lined up at our centers to give blood. It's that spirit to help that continues every day here at the Blood Bank.

As we approach the 10th anniversary of 9/11, blood donation continues to serve as a meaningful way to commemorate a tragic day in our nation's history by saving the lives of those in need today.

Help remember our 9/11 heroes by giving blood during the Blood Bank's "Days of Remembrance" from September 8 to 11. All donors at the below events will receive a commemorative, patriotic lapel pin and be entered to win a "Liberty Remembers" print done by local artist Larry Anderson (shown below).

Regular Platelet Donor Gives Because of Her Father, Sister

Lucy Powers of Townsend, Delaware first joined the Blood Bank in 1975 after her father was diagnosed with lung cancer. With aggressive chemotherapy treatments, he needed platelet and red blood cell transfusions. Lucy could see how desperately they were needed. She began giving blood, and later became a platelet donor. She has continued to donate regularly for the last three decades.

"It's so simple. It's really such an easy thing to do that can save or prolong someone's life," said Lucy. "It makes me feel good to contribute to society and make someone else feel better. I encourage everyone to give blood donation a try."

Many years after Lucy's father needed blood transfusions, her sister was diagnosed with lung cancer and needed blood as well.
