Donor and Patient Stories - Letter from a Recipient
Mr. Travis, CEO
Blood Bank of Delaware
April 26, 2002
Sir:
Just a note to express my gratitude for the Blood Bank. For several years (1995 – 1997),
blood and platelets were available to help my wife during her battle with cancer.
When she passed away, I became a donor to repay what had been given to her.
Then I became a LifeSaver and volunteer. I have given every two months for
the past three years thinking nothing of it.
Then, BOOM. On April 8, 2002, I commenced internal bleeding and was admitted
to Kent General Hospital. My hemoglobin was 12.5 when admitted – in two
days, it dropped to 8. The doctors ordered blood transfusions. The Blood Bank
provided five pints of A+. Only four were needed and I stopped bleeding. I’ve
been “good” for two weeks and I am returning to being a volunteer
today.
In short, I realized we have no knowledge of when we will require blood transfusions,
but it is great to know blood is available immediately here in Delaware. The
doctors told me, “The Blood Bank never fails us.”
Thanks to the whole organization from a grateful recipient.
