Giving Blood - Special Donor Programs
Blood Bank LifeSaver donors agree to be "on-call" and are asked to give blood when there is an extra need for their blood type. Lifesavers receive an advance credit on their membership for each blood donation.

What is Platelet Pheresis?
Platelets are a part of blood critically needed to treat people with leukemia or cancer. Platelets are collected from volunteer donors during a process called pheresis, which means "to separate." During platelet pheresis, the donor's blood passes through a machine that collects the platelets and returns the other components to the donor. The process takes about 90 minutes, is safe and sterile, and provides a lifesaving blood product for seriously ill patients.
The Problem With Platelets
Platelets don't last very long. They have a very short shelf life - only five days. So, donors are needed every day to provide this lifesaving product.
Platelet Donors are Extra Special
Platelet donors relax in a reclining chair, cover up with a warm blanket, and have a selection of movies to watch on a personal TV/DVD. They also receive two (2) credits on their Blood Bank membership account and a small gift such as a T-shirt or mug to remind them of their important act. We hope you’ll give pheresis a try!

A plasma donation, called plasmapheresis, provides about 4 times more plasma than from a regular blood donation. Plasma is used to help treat a variety of diseases and conditions, like hemophilia, severe burns, shock, and exposure to rabies. All eligible AB (the universal plasma type) males are being asked to consider becoming a plasma donor.

Eligible Type "O" donors can give two units of red blood cells on the ALYX Component Collection System. The machine separates the red blood cells and returns the other blood components to the donor. Red blood cells are the most common component used in blood transfusions. The ALYX program allows the Blood Bank to collect more blood - and save more lives - with one donation.
ALYX Requirements:
Men should be at least 5' 1" and 130 pounds.
Women should be at least 5' 5" and 150 pounds.
