EARLEVILLE, Md. – Blood Bank of Delmarva started the week of Monday, September 9 in a good shape inventory-wise, and that was thanks in large part to the contribution of the family and community-centered “Maverick Week in quaint Cecil County, Maryland.”
First, the Terumo fall blood drive brought in an outstanding 70 units on Friday, September 5, and that was followed by a robust performance of the sixth annual In Honor of Maverick Blood Drive held Saturday, September 6 at Hacks Point Fire Company.
Maverick inspired 52 people to sign up to donate blood at a draw that traditionally receives strong, community support, and BBD collected 57 units when all was said and done, capping another successful “Maverick Week” in the books.
Saturday’s blood drive drew many repeat donors who have been attending this special event for all or nearly every year, and there were a few newcomers mixed in as well.
That included local residents, such as Robert Muller, Jamie Keene, Susan Carpenter.
“I enjoy doing this for Maverick and whoever needs it,” Carpenter said, summing up the community’s sentiments beautifully.
In addition, close family and friends such Ashley Hambling and Alicia Linn, Cassandra Alexandra and Zachary Barr, Kelly and Mike Frey, and both grandmothers (Bobbie Edwards and Kathleen Simmons) donated, as usual.
For Holly Lappe, this was her second Maverick blood drive.
“We’re family friends; Maverick goes to school with my son,” Lappe said. “They started the same grade last year.”
Chasie and Bob Green also came back for the second straight year, and this time they brought son, Gaven, a first-time donor.
This was the first drive for Kari Boas, who watches Maverick’s little sister, Mylah, and her friend, Abby. This was the first time Boas donated since her first time at Bohemia Manor High School.
In addition, Savannah Class was inspired by Maverick to donate blood for the first time ever at the In Honor of Maverick Blood Drive.
All donors were greeted and thanked by Maverick Painter, his parents Jason Painter and Shane Simmons, and Maverick’s sisters, Hailey Boulden and Mylah Painter.
