OGLETOWN, Del. – The second Love for Lisa Blood Drive, in memory of Lisa Schmalbach Boyer, is scheduled for Sunday, October 20 at the Delaware Saungerbund & Library Association near Christiana.

This blood drive is a tribute to the memory of the late Boyer, who left an indelible mark on many before she passed away of leukemia on October 15, 2022. Lisa was an athletic trainer at ATI Physical Therapy, and she was one of those larger-than-life, gregarious people who was always laughing and was always fun to be around. Lisa also worked with several student-athletes at local high schools.

This blood drive is coordinated by Dean Dyer, who is Manager, Enterprise Collaboration Systems for New York Blood Center Enterprises, parent company of Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD). Dyer worked with Boyer at ATI. He is working with BBD Account Manager Mary Moore to hold this blood drive.

Dyer hopes to replicate last year’s inaugural event, where 65 units of blood were collected in a moving tribute to Boyer.

“We didn’t know how bad off she was; it hit us hard,” Dyer said. “We processed it, and one my former coworkers was saying that while Lisa was ill, they had donated blood for people like her.”

That inspired Dyer to organize a blood drive that would help people experiencing an illness like Boyer went through. When he called her widower, Pete, he loved the idea and told how Lisa, during her treatments, wasn’t always able to get all the blood she needed due to blood supply shortage.
