Call it a pint for a pint or "Blood for a Brew." Either way the Blood Bank of Delmarva is saving lives this summer in partnership with local craft breweries.

The breweries are raising awareness of the urgent need for blood donations in collaboration with the Blood Bank of Delmarva this summer. From June 9 to September 12, participating breweries are providing coupons for discounted beers at all BBD donor centers and blood drives, hosting "Blood for a Brew" drives, and releasing a limited-time-only brew, “You’re so Vein.”

It’s a tremendous opportunity to do some good while also having some fun. Moreover, the Blood Bank of Delmarva is dealing with a local as well as national shortage in the blood supply. BBD hopes the brewery initiative helps alleviate the shortage.

Bethany Cubbage and Samantha Doss were among the phlebotomists working at Wednesday's Blood for a Brew drive.

Proceeds benefit blood center public awareness programs and scholarships for student leaders that partner with BBD for school blood drives.

Donors will receive a coupon for discounts on the charity brew and receive a commemorative tee-shirt. The tour kicked off Wednesday, June 9 at 2SP Brewing Company, 120 Concord Rd, Units 101-104, Aston, Pa. A total of 22 donors came out.

Among those coming out were Donald Ostmann, Gerry Zell, Rebecca Rowe, and Jim Dudek, an employee at 2SP.

Gerry was a walk in while the others were scheduled appointments.

“I was at the brewery and I just happened to see the truck. I figured, why not?” said Gerry, a local resident. “Plus I’m retired so I’m always looking for fun things to do.”

“I received the email from the Blood Bank saying there was an emergency,” Donald, a longtime BBD donor, said. “I clicked on the link to find locations of blood drives and I saw there was a 2 Stones Pub location [near his home].”

“I was ready to go,” said Rebecca, who drove up from Delaware. “I got vaccinated and was ready to donate again. The beer doesn’t hurt. I got the communication from the Blood Bank last night and this worked out with my schedule.”

All of the donors on June 9 received a “Blood for a Brew” T-shirt and a brewery coupon.

Each brewery will have its own version of the “You’re So Vein” brew, including Revelation, Big Oyster, Tall Tales, Adventureland, Dogfish Head and Crooked Hammock. Blood for a Brew is proudly sponsored by TD Bank.

Lead Blood Collection Tech Joshua Armstrong was the supervisor for Wednesday's blood drive.

Wednesday was the first time in more than a year that BBD used its "M5" bloodmobile.

“Each day 350 blood donors are needed to keep 19 hospitals in Delmarva stocked with the blood products they need,” Blood Bank of Delmarva Director of Donor Recruitment Marie Forrestal said. “We are grateful for this partnership in which we’re supporting local businesses. They in turn are raising awareness for blood donations and having some fun doing it after this difficult year.”
