Update on blood recipient Emily Higgins, 3
Emily Higgins is a 3-year-old little girl that embodies why we work hard to collect blood and blood products every day at the Blood Bank of Delmarva.
Higgins has been able to battle T-Cell Lymphoblastic Lymphoma thanks to blood donors like you. While she has made progress, she still has some time to go before she has completely recovered.
Higgins most recently received a blood transfusion at the end of November, as well as an additional transfusion of platelets, due to her chemotherapy at Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children, said her father, Fred Higgins. In all, she has had five red blood cell transfusions, two platelet transfusions and one fresh frozen plasma transfusion throughout her treatment.
“Emily will be in the maintenance phase of her treatment for the next 18 months,” Fred Higgins said. “We will visit the hospital about once a month, and she takes oral chemotherapy every day. We still have some hard days ahead, with several weeks of planned infusions and scheduled sedation procedures.
“We are very happy that Emily is slowly starting to transition back to a normal life for a 3-year-old, and very proud of how much courage and resolve she has shown throughout her fight with cancer,” he added. “Emily's hair is starting to grow back, and in January she is going to begin swim lessons and ballet classes. She loves spending time with her little brother, Jamie.”
Her mother, Jacqueline, has taken a leave of absence to care for Emily and her 2-month-old brother.
BBD is thankful that things have stabilized somewhat for Emily, and we shall remain vigilant in collecting blood for this little girl, whose blood type is O positive. That’s the product we must keep in stock more than any other.
Independent School Management held the Give for Emily Blood Drive at the neighboring Walgreens parking lot off North Union Street in Wilmington, Del., on July 30. The drive was a big success.
“We want to thank ISM, Walgreens and Blood Bank of Delmarva for all their help for Emily and for all the people that need help,” Jackie Higgins said.
