Blood drive honors mother and baby  who needed transfusions

ELKTON, Md. – The In Honor of the Handy Family Blood Drive continues to serve as  a powerful reminder of the lifesaving mission of Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD), which supplies blood to local hospitals, including for emergencies during childbirth.

Last year, Samantha Handy and her newborn daughter Luci both required urgent blood transfusions after Samantha had undergone an emergency C-section due to oxygen loss to the baby. and complications arose for both her and Luci. Thanks to available blood donations, both made a full recovery and are now thriving with their family in Cecil Couty, Maryland.

To give back, Samantah coordinated the second annual Handy Family Blood Drive on Friday, June 20 at Dreamview Farm in Elkton, Maryland alongside BBD Blood Bank of Delmarva Account Manager Mary Moore. The event booked 35 appointments.

The first Handy Family Blood Drive, organized last year by Samantha’s friend Brittany Lombardi, was also a success, collecting 42 units at Maryland Beer Co.

One of this year’s donors, Leslie Deems, connected personally with the cause.

“Sam’s been our photographer for our kids for years, and when I gave birth to my first son, I was almost in a situation where I needed blood,” Leslie said. “So, you can’t get it if you don’t donate it. It needs to be available, so I’m very grateful for what [Blood Bank of Delmarva] does and being out here.”
