When it comes to Blood Bank of Delmarva’s mobile blood drives none can compare to the magnitude, importance and community involvement of the Ocean City, Md. Blood Drive.
The 20th annual Ocean City Blood Drive is scheduled for 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 17, 2018 at the Ocean City Convention Center.
Donor Recruiter Suzanne Murray works closely with the staff at the Ocean City Convention Center to make this important blood drive happen. Her goal is to collect 350 units of whole blood and 25 units of double red cells.
“I tell people all the time that we need 350 donors everyday to meet the needs of area hospitals throughout Delmarva,” Murray said. “And Ocean City donors supply enough blood for the entire Delmarva Peninsula the day of their blood drive.
“This is the longest running blood drive event we have,” Murray said. “It works because the whole town comes together to support the blood drive. City and county employees are encouraged to donate and are allowed to donate on work time. The town donates the convention center space to us which makes the blood drive cost-effective.”
In addition, the Coastal Association of Realtors has been a long-standing supporter of the blood drive, she said. CAR has not only promoted the drive to its members but has also supplied hundreds of volunteers and blood donors over the last 20 years.
Plus donations from local businesses help to make the event special and something to look forward to. There will be pizza donated by Dough Roller, sweet treats from Candy Kitchen and Wockenfuss, Girl Scout cookies from Worcester County Girl Scouts, and fresh fruit from Berlin Walmart. We cannot thank them enough.
The donors participating in this blood drive will receive a free T-shirt, food and a chance to win a 43-inch smart TV. To book an appointment please call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8 or visit www.delmarvablood.org. Use code OCCC to register.
All hospitals benefit from this drive, including Atlantic General Hospital and Peninsula Regional Medical Center locally.
