For Lydia Timmins, a professor at University of Delaware, and her son and fellow Blue Hen Jake, Mother’s Day means a trip to Blood Bank of Delmarva to donate double red blood cells.

The pair are frequent donors and enjoy the opportunity to spend some quality time together while giving back to their community. They donated double red cells for the fourth time together in late April, in honor of Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 11.

“Since we’re on the same schedule, we try hard to do it together because, A, I can give him a ride and B, I’ll probably buy him food on the way home,” says Lydia , with a smile. “I think it’s really important. I don’t feel like I have time to do a lot of volunteering in my life, and this something I can do that I know is 100 percent a volunteer effort and actually can save someone’s life.”

“Being a blood donor mom is a good thing,” she added.

“I similarly don’t have a lot of time to help in my community, and I feel that donating blood is just a good way to give back without really needing to commit time,” shares Jake. “It’s a really good time-reward scenario.”
