Blood collections are trending 38% lower than what is needed to meet local hospital demand
DELAWARE – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD) has issued an urgent call for blood donors ahead of the upcoming 4th of July holiday weekend amid a critical blood shortage, particularly of types O- and B- blood. Type O-negative is especially vital because it is the universal blood type used in emergencies when there is no time to determine a patient’s blood type.
Blood donations across Delaware are trending 38% lower than what is needed to meet hospital demand. To encourage blood donations during this critical time, BBD is offering blood donors a choice between a branded t-shirt or a packable backpack at all donor centers and community blood drives from June 27, 2025, to July 7, 2025.
Blood donations often drop in the summer due to school breaks, vacations, and busy summer schedules, but this year’s decline is steeper than anticipated. Summer is also known as “trauma season” because injuries and accidents tend to rise with more daylight and outdoor activities, increasing the need for blood. Nearly 25% of trauma patients require blood transfusions for treatment.
“Summer is always a difficult time for the blood supply, but this year has been exceptionally difficult, with blood collections even lower than typical,” said Keith Heim, Vice President at Blood Bank of Delmarva. “You can help by donating, hosting a drive, or volunteering – and we’ve got a t-shirt or backpack waiting as a thank-you.”
In addition to the call for blood donations, BBD is calling on additional businesses, schools, religious groups, and community organizations to step up and host drives this summer. Hosting a drive or volunteering can be just as lifesaving as giving blood.
In light of recent updates to FDA guidance, more people than ever may now be eligible to give. Blood donors can donate every 56 days, and platelet donors can give up to twice per month. To view current eligibility guidelines or make an appointment, visit delmarvablood.org or call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8.
