CLAYMONT, Del. – The Claymont community came together in a powerful show of support for New Castle County Police Officer and Claymont Fire Company volunteer Chris Skrobot, whose courageous fight with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) has inspired many to give back.

Since his diagnosis last year, Chris—a husband and father of two—has relied on dozens of blood and platelet transfusions. To honor him and help patients like him, the second annual In Honor of Chris Skrobot Blood Drive was held Sunday, August 24, and surpassed its goal with 90 lifesaving donations collected. That total included 50 whole blood donors and 20 double red cell donors, topping last year’s inaugural event, which brought in 85 donations.

Fittingly, the first donor of the day was Chris’ wife, Caitylyn Skrobot. Additionally, the drive was organized by Chris’ mother-in-law, Patti Dodd, who reflected on the importance of giving back.

“Chris has had so many blood transfusions and platelet transfusions, we just felt that we had to give back to Blood Bank of Delmarva,” Dodd said. “He’s had 27 blood transfusions and 21 platelet transfusions.”

“He’s doing great. He’s doing well,” she added. “He’s in remission. And, he’s not back to work yet, but he’s a lot better now than he was a year ago.”

Now one year post-bone marrow transplant, Chris is in remission and continuing to recover. He attended Sunday’s blood drive and was overwhelmed by the tremendous response from family, friends, and other members of the community.

“I can’t thank everyone enough for all the support we’ve had since being diagnosed until this point,” Chris said. “April will be two years, and this blood drive is just as good if not better than last year. So, we can’t thank everyone enough. I just hope, through all the social media and everything, that more people come out and donate all throughout the year, not just today. Blood Bank of Delmarva definitely could use the blood. During my treatment, I’ve used my fair share, so whatever we can do to give back.”

The event’s success also reached beyond Claymont, with WPVI 6ABC Action News and WDEL News covering the drive and helping amplify the message: the need for blood donations is constant, and every contribution makes a difference.
