DELMARVA PENINSULA – Delaware Governor Matt Meyer, Maryland Governor Wes Moore, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, and Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro have officially proclaimed September 4, 2025, as National Blood Donation Day in each of the states served, respectively, recognizing the vital role blood donors play in saving lives and sustaining the health of our communities.
The proclamations underscore the ongoing need for blood donations, which help patients facing surgeries, trauma, cancer treatments, chronic illnesses, and other life-threatening conditions.
“On behalf of Blood Bank of Delmarva, we are deeply grateful to Governor Meyer, Governor Moore, Governor Youngkin, and Governor Shapiro for highlighting the critical importance of blood donation,” said Keith Heim, Vice President of BBD. “This recognition not only honors the generosity of our donors, but also shines a light on the constant need for blood to help patients in our hospitals and communities every day.”
Heim and Bruce Sachais, MD, PhD, Chief Medical Officer for BBD and NYBCe accepted the proclamations.
This collective recognition comes at an especially important time. The summer months, especially around holiday weekends like Labor Day, bring a sharp drop in blood donations as residents celebrate the end of summer and prepare for the upcoming school year.
Blood Bank of Delmarva is proud to join in celebrating this important recognition throughout the Delmarva Peninsula and beyond, and BBD encourages all eligible donors to schedule an appointment to give blood. Make an appointment today: Donation Locations – Blood Bank of Delmarva (BBD).
