NEWARK, Del. – The University of Delaware’s (UD) Fall Semester Blood Drive on Monday, October 6 at the Perkins Student Center gave Blood Bank of Delmarva’s (BBD) autumn collections  a strong boost, yielding 87 units of blood.

Just over a month into the semester, UD students showed up in force—filling more than 100 appointments alongside faculty and local residents to help save lives.

The blood drive was coordinated by UD senior Sophia Marisi, a pre-veterinary medicine major who is a member of Sigma Alpha sorority. Marisi is the service chair of Sigma Alpha, the professional agriculture sorority which has a long history of providing volunteers to UD blood drives. Marisi’s sorority sisters helped her book appointments, set up the blood drive, and break down the blood drive setup  on Monday.

“I’m really glad of the turnout,” Marisi said. “I’m really proud of the sisters. Everyone came together to help just get the word out. We hung up flyers, we sat in the Trabant University Center for a few hours, and the sisters posted wherever they could.”

“We were also able to recruit members of the community,” she added. “And I’m just really happy for everyone who could donate.”

BBD will back at UD on November 10.  To book an appointment, please call 1-888-8-BLOOD-8 or schedule online.
