The second Remy’s Heroes Blood Drive being held in honor of Remington “Remy” Welch is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesday, June 18 at the Delaware Department of Insurance in Dover, Delaware.

Remy is the son of Jen Welch, an employee at the Department of Insurance, and her colleagues Roberta Jones and Elizabeth Morgan are working with Blood Bank of Delmarva Account Manager Ralph Groves to hold a blood drive in honor of Remy for the second straight year.

Insurance Commissioner Trinidad Navarro was among the several Department of Insurance associates who donated at last year’s blood drive, which drew an impressive 57 donors.

“Last year, the staff of the Department of Insurance came together to coordinate and participate in a blood drive for one of our employee’s whose young son had been diagnosed with cancer and had been in need of blood,” Navarro said. “Thankfully, this year we celebrate because he is a cancer survivor.  Dozens of our dedicated staff participated in the drive, coordinated with the Blood Bank of Delmarva.  It was a huge success that we proudly hosted in our meeting room of our Dover office.

“We’re doing it again this year on June 18th. We hope to make this an annual event to not only help not only our employee’s families but others in Delmarva in need of blood,” he added. “Giving blood is a small act with a big impact – sign-up to donate today.”

Remy, 10, was diagnosed with Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma, on November 25, 2022. He needed four units of blood after undergoing chemotherapy.

Jen Welch appreciates all the support she received from her colleagues during her family’s ordeal.

“Remy has done so well this past year in recovering from his chemotherapy,” Welch said. “He hasn’t needed a blood transfusion since he was in the middle of treatment.

“This will most definitely be a tradition for us. If not a blood drive, I plan on making regular donations from here on out,” she said. “Seeing the impact that blood has on the life of our child will forever be embedded in my soul.  I couldn’t possibly keep this all to myself.  As long as I am able, I will donate!”
