STANTON, Del. – University of Delaware (UD) junior Olivia Demko and freshman Nicole Hartogs helped continue the strong connection between UD and Blood Bank of Delmarva. Demko donated for the first time ever in April at the Christiana Donor Center. The medical diagnostics major/pre-physician’s assistant major, was inspired to donate for two reasons.

“I needed to volunteer for my sorority, Alpha Xi Delta,” she said. “And, my professor is very passionate about blood banking, and she inspired me to do it.”

Meanwhile, Hartogs, a nursing major, finished her volunteer hours at BBD. She has enjoyed learning about blood banking during her time volunteering. She worked as a greeter at the front desk.

“I have required service hours for a course, and this was an approved place to volunteer,” she said. “I’ll definitely come back [to BBD] and keep volunteering.”

Demko said the process went well, and she plans to come back and donate again. She also said she will tell her friends how easy blood donation was.

Back on campus, the University of Delaware Blood Drive on April 16 booked 90 appointments to help support BBD’s blood emergency.
